The Atrium, a Choice Community, in Johnstown is reportedly closing its doors after 35+ years of service, according to a press release obtained by 6 News.

Officials say the financial strain of operating a senior living facility was compounded by the COVID pandemic and high inflation, and ultimately prompted the decision to close the facility.

The nonprofit company stated that those issues made it difficult for the facility to meet its operating expenditures.

The Atrium provides more than $400,000 in charity care annually and unfortunately, under the current industry conditions, we have no choice but to permanently close The Atrium,” provides Craig Saylor, Senior Choice Board Chairman. “We are proud of the quality care and services we have provided to so many Johnstown community seniors who have called The Atrium their home these past 30 years. It is unfortunate the organization can no longer continue to absorb the charity care and meet our operating expenditures.

The Atrium provides various types of care to area senior citizens who have limited resources.

Atrium officials say they are currently working with the Department of Human Services, the Ombudsman and other area healthcare providers to assist the facility's residents with their transition to a new home within the next 60 days.
